Susie’s Law –stricter animal cruelty laws for N.C.

Action Alert Header

Susie’s Law
Senate Bill 254

On August 2009,a puppy was set on fire and left to die. Although near death with second and third-degree burns on over 60 percent of her body,a broken jaw and teeth, and covered in over 300 maggots,“Susie”had a will to survive.
The perpetrator was caught, however justice would not be served.  North Carolina structured sentencing guidelines would only allow the guilty party,21-year-old Lashawn Whitehead,to serve 4-5 months, suspended sentence (probation) for a Class I felony of Cruelty to Animals.

Dear Decision Maker-

As a concerned animal advocate and constituent in your district,I am writing to urge you to support Susie's Law (Senate Bill 254) for stricter animal cruelty laws. Never has this need been more horribly illustrated than in the recent case of Susie, the puppy who was set on fire and left to die.

Here is a short video documenting Susie's injuries and recovery. *Some Images May Be Disturbing* http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VZx5BBpIW48

Justice would not be served in this case. North Carolina structured sentencing guidelines would only allow the guilty party,21-year-old Lashawn Whitehead,to serve 4-5 months, suspended sentence (probation) for a Class I felony of Cruelty to Animals. We,the concerned citizens of North Carolina, want Cruelty to Animals to be reclassified as a Class F felony, instead of the current Class I felony,in which the sentencing would carry an active prison sentence.

Statistics show a sharp correlation between animal abuse & other crimes, including rape, robbery, murder, sexual homicide, domestic abuse and more. Studies show 100% of sexual homicide perpetrators started by abusing animals.

The matter is urgent. Right now hundreds of animals all across our state are being abused and neglected. Without us – without you, they have no voice. As your constituent,I respectfully urge you to advocate and support Susie's Law for tougher animal cruelty laws in North Carolina. A message needs to be sent to offenders that abuse will not be tolerated. Will you help us in sending this message? I look forward to your response.
