‘Susie’s Law’ will become law in North Carolina

The Senate passed Susie’s Law, on a 47-0 vote, Wednesday. The measure now goes to Gov. Bev Perdue for her signature. Thanks to Don Vaughan, Pricey Harrison and Maggie Jeffus who authored ‘Susie’s Law’. Guilford County Animal Shelter that saved Susie. Susie’s Law goes to Senate Floor Today

Susie’s Law will voted on by the full Senate today after 3PM. It will be the last bill heard on the schedule. Susie’s Law passes Judiciary I, heading to Senate floor

RALEIGH — A Senate Judiciary Committee gave a key procedural nod to Susie’s Law, an animal cruelty bill sparked by a Greensboro case.

The measure now goes to the Senate floor, the last step before it would be sent to Gov. Bev Perdue for its signature. No opposition was voiced during Tuesday morning’s committee meeting and the Senate Judiciary I Committee recommended the measure on a unanimous voice vote. Read more

Coalition to Unchain Dogs: Fence-A-Thon

The Coalition to Unchain Dogs will be building 30+ fences in just 3 days, meaning better lives for dozens of Durham dogs.

June 11-13
Durham, NC

In addition to building fences and providing spay/neuter/vaccinations, the Coalition also advocates for regulation of tethering. The Coalition was instrumental in helping pass a tethering ordinance in Durham County, and it will go into effect at the end of June. They have been steadily building during the education and warning period over the last two years to build as many fences as possible to help people comply with the pending ordinance and even though they will continue to build fences indefinitely, they’re making one big push during the Fence-A-Thon to help as many people and dogs as they can.

20 Dogs Seized In Dogfighting Raid in Randolph County

Randolph County, NC — A Franklinville man faces felony dogfighting charges in North Carolina and Virginia after authorities seized 16 dogs from his property and four dogs they said he attempted to transport over state lines. “A lot of them were pretty underweight, there were a few that looked ok, there was one dog with a partially amputated leg,” she said. RALEIGH — The state House voted 113-0 Wednesday to pass Susie’s Law, which would increase the penalties for animal cruelty. “No animal should ever have this kind of treatment,” Rep. Maggie Jeffus  said on the floor. Read more

State lawmakers advance “Susie’s Law” Tuesday

“Susie’s law” is named for a Greensboro dog that was beaten and set on fire last summer. The dog recovered, but her abuser got only months in jail for the crime. This vote moves supporters one step closer to getting their bill turned into law. Read more
