Susie gives stamp of approval to new law

RALEIGH — Susie gave her stamp, or rather, paw print of approval to a law she inspired during a bill signing ceremony outside the N.C. Executive Mansion today.

The pit bull mix wore pearls and had her nails painted pink to place an inked up paw print beside Gov. Bev Perdue’s signature on a measure to increase the penalties for animal cruelty. Read more

‘Susie’s Law’ will become law in North Carolina

The Senate passed Susie’s Law, on a 47-0 vote, Wednesday. The measure now goes to Gov. Bev Perdue for her signature. Thanks to Don Vaughan, Pricey Harrison and Maggie Jeffus who authored ‘Susie’s Law’. Guilford County Animal Shelter that saved Susie. Susie’s Law goes to Senate Floor Today

Susie’s Law will voted on by the full Senate today after 3PM. It will be the last bill heard on the schedule. Susie’s Law passes Judiciary I, heading to Senate floor

RALEIGH — A Senate Judiciary Committee gave a key procedural nod to Susie’s Law, an animal cruelty bill sparked by a Greensboro case.

The measure now goes to the Senate floor, the last step before it would be sent to Gov. Bev Perdue for its signature. No opposition was voiced during Tuesday morning’s committee meeting and the Senate Judiciary I Committee recommended the measure on a unanimous voice vote. Read more

“Susie’s Law” passes House, on to Senate

RALEIGH — The state House voted 113-0 Wednesday to pass Susie’s Law, which would increase the penalties for animal cruelty. “No animal should ever have this kind of treatment,” Rep. Maggie Jeffus  said on the floor. Read more

State lawmakers advance “Susie’s Law” Tuesday

“Susie’s law” is named for a Greensboro dog that was beaten and set on fire last summer. The dog recovered, but her abuser got only months in jail for the crime. This vote moves supporters one step closer to getting their bill turned into law. Read more
